GREETINGS FROM FR. BILLMay
is the month of Mary. This has been a tradition for centuries in our Catholic Church
- to take this month to honor the Mother of God and the Mother of the Church. It
seems very appropriate that the day on which we honor our own mothers comes during this
month of May - the month of Mary. Mary
played a key role in God's plan of salvation because she cooperated with God's creative
power in bringing a new life to the world. Mary said "Yes" to God even
though she could not possibly have understood exactly what her "yes" would
entail. Mary
gave birth to a son and then willingly surrendered Him to the Will of His Father.
She didn't stand in the way of the path Jesus came to realize He must walk.
She stood with Him, encouraged Him and finally, let Him go. A part of Mary
would always journey with Jesus because she had helped shape Him into the man He was.
She was there when He took His first breath and she was there when He took his
last. Today
we honor our own mothers who do (or did) for us so much of what Mary did for Jesus.
Our mothers cooperated with God and said "Yes" when so many others are
saying "No." Our mothers nurtured us before and after birth. They
stood by us and encouraged us along the way. They were the ones who taught us our
first prayers and dried our first tears. They were the ones who stood by (sometimes
silently, sometimes not) when we began plotting the course of our lives. They stand
behind us still (perhaps on earth, perhaps in heaven) loving us and praying for us.
Happy Mother's Day to all our Moms!!! Today
we also celebrate the Feast of Pentecost which has sometimes been called the birthday of
the church since it was the gift of the Holy Spirit, given this day, which enabled
the apostles to fearlessly preach the Good News of God's love and salvation. May the
Spirit of God also set us on fire with love for our Catholic faith. If
you have not yet made a contribution or pledge to our annual campaign: One
Bread, One Body, please
do so this week. This is an important campaign to support the works of our
archdiocese and particularly, those rural and remote parishes which cannot support
themselves. There are pledge cards available in the pews and on the tables near each
exit.
